Round Corner Picture Frame Concept

If you think about it, rectangles with rounded corners are everywhere. Look at the smart phone that you are likely reading this on. Other examples are road signs, retail graphics, or other printed information graphic designs commonly contain round corners on a text box or image container box. Building a picture frame with round corners is much more difficult. Much like the round picture frame construction, the molding design is cut last. Frames designed for fast production have prefinished stock that can be cut to size and stapled together. The construction process of our frames is completely opposite.

Japanese Block Print
  • We discovered a market for the narrow, ½” inch wide round corner frames by people requesting them. The concept isn’t ours but has been around for many, many years and is a favorite for framing ancient Japanese block prints. Most often people request this style of frame made of walnut, however black lacquer and cherry hardwood has also been a favorite. Be sure to check out our blog post concerning the design of this frame as there are details to be considered before placing your order.
Curved Edge Frames
  • One could argue about the proper term for this shape. It is unconventional; not something seen or noticed by many people. Unless otherwise requested we build our curved edge or round corner frames with radius on both the inside and outside corners. More material provides needed strength at this critical point. It is also better looking!
Need More Space for Artwork?
  • If you have a stretched canvas or if you are utilizing multiple mats, acrylic glazing plus a fome core back, you might need a deeper rabbet (relief) than our stock 3/8” inch design. Check our image of “deep profile” rounded corner frames on this page. Typically, this has an overall depth of 2”. However, something more substantial such as 3” is certainly possible. Our clients often want this design for a bold look and not function.
Contemporary Design
  • We have found round corner picture frames made by other builders in flea markets that have survived many years and most often in rough shape, understandably.  As I mentioned, the concept has been around for many years, but our design and variety of colors brings it up to date and applicable for modern contemporary décor.

Painted Round Corner Frames

Our painted frames are most often made of primed MDF (composite fiberboard) which offers a very uniform surface perfect for paint – primer. We always recommend hardwood for framing heavy items such as glass. Hardwood can be painted and offers higher strength than the composite fiberboard. Hardwood is also a better choice than MDF in an area of high humidity.
